Taking a river cruise down the Nile in Egypt is something that’s on a lot of slow traveller’s bucket lists. Seeing the ancient sights and travelling by boat is like something straight out of Agatha Christie.
Getting your packing right is essential for making sure your trip is successful. You’ll need to bring the right clothes for the weather and to respect the cultural norms of the country.
I recently went on a Nile cruise as part of a two week trip to Egypt and I struggled to know what to take with me. I was worried about dressing modestly as well as whether I’d be too hot during the excursions.
However, you don’t need to worry – it’s not as difficult as you may think! This guide covers everything that you should take with you on a Nile cruise from clothing and accessories to toiletries and tech.
How much luggage can you take on a Nile cruise?
Some Nile cruises may have luggage restrictions, so check with your tour operator before you travel to be sure. I didn’t even think about this and did panic during our transfer when we saw that most people just had a small case with them!
Unlike when you fly, we found that there weren’t really strict luggage restrictions on our Nile cruise and our cases weren’t weighed as we got on board. However, there isn’t much storage space in the cabins and so it’s best not to bring too much with you.
We brought one large suitcase and one medium suitcase between two of us, plus our backpacks, and we had more than enough clothes for the trip.
Clothes to bring on a Nile cruise
Packing clothes for a Nile cruise is all about staying cool, comfortable, and culturally respectful. Think lightweight, breathable fabrics you can layer, with modest pieces for temple visits and a few smart casual outfits for relaxed evenings on board.
Clothes for excursions
For excursions, opt for loose, breathable clothing that covers shoulders and knees to stay comfortable in the heat and respectful at temples and historic sites. Practical pieces like linen trousers, airy tops, and a light scarf will keep you cool while protecting you from the sun.
For excursions, you’re likely to need:
- Vest tops / lightweight t-shirts
- Linen shirts for layering
- Scarf / pashmina for additional cover if needed
- Linen or floaty trousers or skirt
- Comfortable walking sandals or trainers
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Backpack to carry essentials in like suncream and a reusable water bottle
- Jacket or extra layer (sometimes the early mornings can be chilly)
Top tips for packing for Nile cruise excursions:
- Bring lightweight clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton or linen
- Neutral or light colours work well to reflect the sun
- Keep shoulders and knees covered
Clothes for on the boat
On the boat, comfort is key and the dress code is more relaxed than at some of the tourist sights. Pack relaxed, lightweight outfits you can lounge in during the day, whether you’re sunbathing on deck, reading in the shade, or enjoying the views as you sail along the Nile.
Be sure to bring:
- Swimwear
- Flip flops, sandals, or sliders
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Cover up to wear for breakfast and lunch
What to wear for dinner on a Nile cruise
Dinner on a Nile cruise is usually smart casual, so think polished but comfortable rather than overly formal. A breezy dress, tailored trousers with a nice top, or a lightweight shirt will feel put together without being too much after a long day of exploring.
The dress code for dinner will depend which ship you’re on, so check first when you’re doing your packing. We stayed on the MS Royal Adventure and the vibe was very casual.
Men could wear shorts in the dining room and people very much just wore whatever they felt comfortable in. I like to dress a little bit nicer for dinner so I did wear dresses but the heels stayed very firmly in my suitcase!
Evenings on the Nile can get a little chilly, depending on what time of year you go, so bring a couple of layers to pop on over the top so you can still enjoy a drink on top deck.
These items are perfect for evenings on the Nile:
- Dresses
- Smarter trousers and tops or shirts
- More dressy sandals
- Jacket or jumper
What to wear as a woman in public in Egypt
When exploring Egypt, dressing modestly as a woman will help you feel comfortable and respectful especially when you’re travelling outside hotels and tourist resorts. Loose, lightweight clothing that covers your shoulders, chest, and knees is ideal for the heat and aligns well with local customs.
I did see women wearing more revealing outfits at some of the temples including low cut tops and shorts. I did stick to keeping covered in the most part as I wanted to be respectful but I didn’t feel uncomfortable at any point during the trip.
I would say the following items are essential for your Egypt packing list as a woman:
- Maxi dresses
- Wide leg trousers
- Lightweight shirts to pop over outfits
- Lightweight scarf for additional cover if needed
Toiletries to bring on a Nile cruise
When it comes to toiletries, packing a few well-chosen essentials will keep you comfortable throughout your Nile cruise without overloading your suitcase. Focus on sun protection, insect repellent, and everyday personal care items you might not find on board.
- Suncream with a high SPF (we took factor 50) and aftersun
- Lip balm with SPF
- Skincare products and make up – I just went for an SPF moisturiser and a slick of mascara in the day time as it was so hot, but bring whatever you like!
- Mosquito repellent and bite cream
- Conditioner (shampoo and soap were supplied on board but check before you travel – I also bought the mini toiletries with me from the hotel we stayed in before, just in case!)
- Toothpaste, toothbrushes, floss, and mouthwash
- Shaving products
- Period products
Don’t forget to bring a small medical kit with you that contains:
- Paracetamol or pain killers
- Imodium (we found that this was an absolute essential!)
- Motion sickness medication (we actually found that we didn’t need this at all, even for my dad and brother who both get bad motion sickness)
Travel essentials and documents for a Nile cruise
Having your travel essentials and documents organised will make your Nile cruise feel far more relaxed from the start. Keep important paperwork like your passport, visa, travel insurance details, and cruise confirmations easily accessible, along with copies stored digitally just in case.
Don’t forget to bring:
- Passport
- Visa – if you’re travelling from the UK, you’ll need to buy a visa at one of the bank kiosks upon arrival at the airport. The cost for this is 25 USD and is payable in cash only. You can also pay in euros or pounds, but only at select kiosks.
- Trip paperwork (or digital copies on your phone) – ours said to print it out and bring with us, although we found that we actually didn’t really need it.
- Cash (Egyptian pounds, euros, dollars, or British pounds) and a credit card that you can use abroad
Tech and gadgets
Bringing a few key tech items will help you capture memories and stay organised throughout your Nile cruise. Prioritise essentials like your phone or camera, chargers, and a power bank so you’re never caught short during long excursion days or scenic sailings.
- Power bank (ideally a solar power bank so you never get caught short)
- Phone / camera
- Charging cables
- Kindle, eReader, or tablet (don’t leave yours on the coach transfer like I did!)
- Binoculars for spotting things on the river banks
- Plug adaptors (Egypt uses type C and F plugs, the ones with the two pins that are used in Europe)
- Earplugs – it can get very noisy overnight, particularly when the boat is docking or is parked next to other boats
A Nile cruise is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and packing thoughtfully means you can focus on soaking it all in rather than worrying about what you’ve forgotten.
With lightweight clothing, practical essentials, and a few comfort items in your suitcase, you’ll be well prepared for everything from temple-hopping days to slow afternoons drifting along the river. Pack smart, pack light, and get ready to enjoy Egypt at its most unforgettable.
