Oh, to be in Rome. It’s one of the most popular cities in Europe and beyond, attracting by far the most visitors of Italy’s big hitters despite tough competition. And with its serious historic and cultural credentials, you can totally see why!

Narrowing down the best things to do here is no mean feat. In truth, you could spend at least a week getting lost in its sprawling streets.

Still, whether you’re on a longer Italy tour holiday including multiple cities or a whistle-stop trip, you’ll want to prioritise how you spend your time.

Ice cream

That doesn’t mean rushing around constantly, of course. Rome has more than its fair share of top-notch restaurants and relaxing bars and cafés for when you need to refuel.

But in between those pit stops, here are the most essential attractions to tick off!

The Colosseum

Where else to start but here? This imposing bowl-like structure is a sight to behold, and huge parts of it have been impeccably preserved.

Colosseum

Its past life is what makes it so fascinating. The building used to host thousands of spectators for Rome’s famous gladiator fights, where fierce warriors would take on wild beasts as well as each other.

And when standing in its upper tiers, it’s not actually so difficult to imagine!

Vatican City

Vatican City is actually a tiny independent state that’s surrounded by Rome, rather than being part of it. Around 500 people call this place their home – including none other than the Pope himself!

The two main spots to see here are Saint Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, home to the famous Sistine Chapel. Keep in mind you’ll need to be dressed conservatively to step inside, with no bare knees, midriffs or shoulders on show.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon is another of Rome’s major relics and one of its best preserved. It was first built in AD 119-128 and still stands strong today, supported by its iconic pillars.

The real glory lies inside however, culminating in its hemispherical dome with a nine-metre hole welcoming in light and connecting the temple with the heavens.

Roman Forum

Many moons ago, the Roman Forum was the centre of state ceremony, commerce, law and bureaucracy. Its remains still sit high above the Colosseum to the west – and you can visit both with the same ticket.

It’s easy to get a feel for the power the place once commanded, bolstered by its strategic position away from the bustling city.

Trevi Fountain

Trevi Fountain

The Trevi Fountain is arguably the most famous fountain anywhere in the world. It remains a stunning creation, sitting proudly in front of the Palazzo Poli.

It’s customary to throw a coin or two into the fountain before you leave, with over €1 million ending up in the water every year before going to charity.

How many of these locations will make it onto your ideal Rome itinerary?
