Athens is one of those cities where you’ll find ancient ruins on every corner. The Greek capital is rich in history and you only have to see the Parthenon looming down on every part of it to realise that but you’ll also find some fabulous cheap eats.
There’s a real hustle and bustle feel to Athens, where people pick up food on the go as they go about their lives. Of course, you’re very much looking at kebabs and other popular Mediterranean dishes, and if you’re visiting it can be difficult to know which stall or outlet to actually stop at.
Food is an instrumental part of experiencing Athens, so as you hop on and hop off your sightseeing bus, make sure you’ve got some spots noted down to grab a quick bite and keep those energy levels up, as well as experiencing the sumptuous tastes of the city.

To get you started, here are five spots you simply must try if you’re looking to save money during your trip to Athens.
Hoocut
Located on a busy side street near Monastiraki, Hoocut is a pitta spot opened by several renowned chefs in Greece. It puts an emphasis on simple street food but with high quality ingredients and has been lauded by many, including Gordon Ramsey.
It’s quick service (after all it is a fast food shop) but the results are fantastic and you’ll struggle to find a better souvlaki than here. The Lamb True Pitta is the one you want for a real taste of Athens, but there are plenty of other options, including a vegan offering.

Kostas
Souvlaki is something you’ll find everywhere, so you’re probably going to want more than one on a cheap city break to Athens. Tucked away in the bustling Agias Irinis Square, Kostas is another great option that many people swear is the best in the city.
It’s cheap, cheerful and offers real charm.
You’ll find various options for your meat, while the tangy tzatziki isn’t to be missed. Enjoy dolloping the creamy cucumber yogurt dip onto your kebab for added flavour.

Ariston
Of course, we know the Greeks are excellent at their pie making too and you’ll find some of the best at Ariston. The family run bakery is in the heart of the city and you’ll find dozens of options, with fillings including spinach, cheese, mince meat and some other excellent concoctions.
Always served fresh from the oven, they’re budget friendly and another way to get a real taste of the city while on the go.
O Kostas

For those wanting to try a gyro, O Kostas is one of the best options.
It’s just a tiny hole-in-the-wall place near Syntagma Square, so you do have to look out for it. However, the queues may give it away.
That said, it is food worth queuing for. They’re renowned for their gyros, complete with crispy fries and they use high quality ingredients while keeping prices low.
Oineas

Located in the lively Psiri neighbourhood, Oineas is the spot to seek out if you’re looking for mezes. The traditional taverna offers an extensive range of small plates that are great for sharing.
You’ll find all the classics, from feta to halloumi, plenty of tzatziki and some delightful seafood and meats too.
There’s also some great local wines available, as well as ouzo, a dry anise-flavoured aperitif that is served straight. Just be careful with the latter!
