Winter is finally here, and while money is often tight this time of year, a cosy getaway is a worthwhile expense for many. Fortunately, there are plenty of great getaway spots around the UK that will make for an ideal relaxing winter break.
This article will look at some of my favourite places in the UK so you can book your trip with as little hassle as possible.
Hillside Cottage, Edington
First on my list is this hidden gem found in the Wiltshire countryside. This grand cottage sleeps up to twelve people, making it the ideal location for gathering friends or family, which is a common occurrence over the festive period.
Brilliantly situated, Hillside Cottage is excellent as a base to explore the surrounding countryside or head to Bath, which is less than an hour away by car or public transportation.
Hillside Cottage contains six en-suite rooms, each with steam showers for an added touch of luxury. What makes this venue so unique is that it feels like a welcoming family home with a fireplace that’s perfect for cold winter evenings with friends and loved ones.
You can even use the private patio BBQ if you want to brave the cold.
Just a short walk up from the cottage, you’ll find a small barn with a wet and dry sauna so you can unwind and relax in complete bliss. There’s also an outdoor plunge pool and hot tub.
Suppose you prefer to relax a little differently. In that case, you can go down to the Trailhead Cabin, a small recreational space with a small kitchen, dartboard, wood-fired stove, and even an outdoor fire pit, perfect for chilly evenings with loved ones.
You’ll find the award-winning Three Daggers Pub, Brewery and Farm Shop in the village.
Palé Hall, Gwynedd

Up next is a Welsh gem, Palé Hall, located just on the edges of the Eryri National Park in Gwynedd. Palé Hall was built in the 19th century and resembles something out of Harry Potter, complete with turrets and grand interiors.
Designed by Scottish engineer Henry Robinson, this building is as Victorian as they come — reflected by the impressive fireplaces, wood-panelled walls, and elaborate ceiling designs. The building has been carbon-free since 1920 thanks to its hydroelectric generator, providing the site with clean power.
At this time of year, snow is almost guaranteed, so you’ll be blessed with some incredible views of perhaps the UK’s best-known mountain range, formerly known as Snowdonia. This building is a true marvel and a real hidden diamond in the local area, so much so that it can often fly right under the radar despite its incredible location and interiors.
Kinloch Lodge, Isle of Skye

Finally, if you truly want to get away from the big city and enjoy a relaxing winter break, a trip to the Isle of Skye is a top choice. The Kinloch Lodge has been owned by Lord Macdonald, the current high clan chief of Clan Donald, since 1972 and is among the island’s finest hotels.
The fact that it has been in operation for over five decades is a testament to its success, which we’re sure you’ll understand from the moment you set foot there.
Kinloch Lodge could be an excellent choice for your festive season getaway if you’re a big fan of all things traditional. Built in 1676, it’s a classic.
It was first operated as a farmhouse before being converted to a shooting lodge by Clan Donald in the 1700s. Despite this conversion, it still looks and feels like a family home, with plenty of heirlooms, paintings and antiques.
This spot is perfect for those chasing a luxury getaway and ideal for those with a keen interest in history and preserving traditional sites.
Despite its grandeur, it has a cosy feel, which is complemented by the incredible views of Loch Na Dal and the Cuillin Hills, popular spots for outdoor lovers. While you might choose to stay inside at this time of year, being able to appreciate the sights from a distance is something you can do with a glass of local scotch in hand.
Kinloch Lodge looks incredible at wintertime — particularly if you’re blessed with a sprinkling of snow, which fits perfectly with the surrounding fir trees and the crackling fires within.
