In today’s fast-paced world, many of us are always connected to our devices. Whether it’s work emails, social media, or checking the news, we are constantly plugged in.

But what if there was a way to escape this constant connection and truly relax on your holiday? That’s where an unplugged vacation, also known as a digital detox, comes in.

An unplugged vacation is when you intentionally disconnect from your devices, like your phone, laptop, or tablet, while on holiday. The goal is to give your mind and body a break from technology and enjoy being in the moment.

This can help you recharge, reduce stress, and make the most of your time away. In this blog post, I’ll talk about the benefits of unplugging during your vacation and share some tips on how to stay disconnected. Plus, I’ll recommend a few great destinations where you can fully detox from technology.

Why you should take a digital detox on your next trip

There are many benefits to going unplugged on your holiday.

1. It can reduce stress

Constantly checking your phone or email can add stress, even when you’re supposed to be relaxing. Seeing work updates and emails you need to reply to means you’ll add more to your mental load.

By unplugging, you free yourself from the pressure to respond to messages or be available 24/7.

2. More time for yourself

Without the distractions of technology, you can focus on activities that matter most to you, like reading a book, going for a walk, or spending quality time with loved ones.

3. Better sleep

Using screens before bed can disrupt your sleep. By disconnecting, you allow your mind to relax and prepare for a deeper, more restful sleep.

4. Mindfulness and presence

When you’re not distracted by technology, you can be more present in the moment. This allows you to truly appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and enjoy your holiday to the fullest.

Top tips for staying unplugged

It’s not always easy to disconnect, especially when we’re used to being constantly being on our phones. With these simple tips, you can make the most of your unplugged vacation.

Set expectations before you go

Let your friends, family, or work colleagues know that you’ll be offline and be sure to set an out of office on your email. This way, they’ll understand and respect your decision to disconnect.

Turn off notifications

Before you leave, turn off notifications on your phone so you aren’t tempted to check your social media channels. You can even use apps that help you stay focused and limit your screen time.

Bring a non-digital entertainment option

Pack a book, journal, or puzzle to keep yourself busy without relying on your phone or tablet, or book lots of sightseeing trips so you won’t be thinking about your phone.

If you require an eyewear prescription, packing for a screen free trip gets a lot easier with daily disposables. Many travellers switch to cheap lenses for the length of their holiday, since each pair gets thrown away after use, so there is no need to carry solution bottles, cases, or worry about hygiene while you are away from home.

It is one less thing to think about, which fits nicely with the whole point of unplugging in the first place.

Also, bring a camera, rather than your phone so you’re not tempted to check your emails and messages when you take a picture.

Choose activities that don’t require technology

Plan activities that allow you to immerse yourself in nature or culture, such as hiking, swimming, or exploring local markets.

Leave your devices in your room

When you’re out and about, leave your phone and other gadgets behind. Focus on the sights and sounds around you instead of worrying about capturing the perfect picture.

If you’re worried in case you need your phone in an emergency, then take it with you but keep it switched off.

Use a travel-only phone

If you absolutely need to stay in touch, consider using a basic phone for emergencies. This will help you avoid getting sucked into endless emails and social media scrolling.

My top recommendations for unplugged destinations

Now that you know why and how to unplug, it’s time to choose the perfect destination. Here are a couple of my personal recommendations for places where you can fully disconnect from technology and enjoy the peace of your surroundings.

1. Lake District, UK

The Lake District is a beautiful area in England known for its stunning lakes, mountains, and charming villages. It’s a perfect place to unplug, with plenty of outdoor activities like hiking, kayaking, and enjoying peaceful lakeside walks.

The fresh air and breathtaking views will help you leave behind the noise of technology and focus on nature. I’ve stayed at Great Langdale Campsite a couple of times during camping trips in the Lake District and there is no mobile signal there so it forces you to switch off, even if you don’t want to!

2. The Caribbean

If you’re looking for a warm, tropical destination to relax and unplug, the Caribbean is a great choice. Barbados, with its beautiful beaches and calm atmosphere, is perfect for disconnecting. Spend your days soaking up the sun, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and enjoying delicious local food.

Alternatively, Mexico offers a range of peaceful spots, such as the Riviera Maya. These locations offer a blend of sandy beaches, ancient ruins, and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to disconnect from technology and embrace the slower pace of life.

It’s also expensive to use your phone here (unless you buy an international sim card) so I limit my use to when I have Wi-Fi in the hotel.

3. Long haul flights

A lot of people find long haul flights quite the endurance test, but I love them for the fact that you can’t be contacted for those hours you’re in the air. Challenge yourself next time you fly: don’t buy Wi-Fi on the flight and keep yourself disconnected for the entire time.

An unplugged vacation is the perfect way to recharge and take a break from the constant flow of information and distractions. Whether you choose the peaceful beauty of the Lake District or the warm beaches of the Caribbean, the key is to disconnect and enjoy the present moment.

So, next time you go on holiday, why not try leaving your devices behind and see how much more you can enjoy?
