Baslow to Chatsworth circular walk with coffee stop

Distance: 5.5 miles

Time: Allow three hours if you fancy stopping for a coffee and a slice of cake too!

Parking: Nether End car park, Baslow. This is a pay and display car park. Arrive early as it does get full quickly, I’ve been driving round looking for a space a few times! There is also free parking on the surrounding roads if you can find a space.

This is a great Sunday morning stroll with plenty of stunning countryside views. You’ll also get to visit the Chatsworth Estate villages of Pilsley and Edensor which are beautiful.

Stop off at Chatsworth House for a coffee and a slice of cake before heading back to your car. I also heard that the pasties here are amazing!

The route

Turn left out of Nether End car park and walk along the main road. On your left you’ll see the Cavendish Hotel.

If you’re looking to treat yourself then this is a great place to spend the night or grab a bite to eat.

During summer they did an amazing seafood and champagne event on their terrace which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Bear right at the junction and then as you pass Baslow church, take the bridge on your left over the river. Cross the road and go through a stile between two cottages.

Walk up the narrow stone path and cross a stile. Then cross three fields and three stiles.

There is a wall on the right so keep following this. When you get to the fourth field, turn left across the field to cross a stile by a gate.

Just be careful at this point as, while we were there, there were cows with calves in the field. Luckily we were able to keep a safe distance away from them but keep dogs on leads so as not to frighten them.

Turn right onto a lane and continue along here. Next up, there’s a stile by a gate on your left which you need to go through.

Keep following the wall on your left as it turns right and then left. Up here you’ll get some lovely views of the surrounding Peak District and Derbyshire countryside.

After the left turning, cross a stile by a gate in the corner of the field. Walk diagonally right down the field.

Here you’ll pass underneath some power lines. Just be careful down here as it is quite steep and slippery when muddy.

Cross a stile and a footbridge at the bottom.

Cross over the road, through the stile and then climb the hillside towards the right side. There is a path here which splits in two but then joins up again, so keep following this. This bit of the walk is quite steep.

Cross a wooden stile and then turn left and follow the wall here. Go over the stile and you’ll find yourself on a road.

Turn right and follow the road.

Next up, you’ll find yourself in Pilsley, one of the Chatsworth Estate villages. Turn right past the Devonshire Arms and follow the road here.

There’s a sign which says “no through road”. When you reach the end of the houses, follow the track and then turn left at the Y junction.

When you reach the end of the walled lane, turn left over a stile and cross the field to the next stile. Cross the road and keep going straight, along a narrow road.

This is a quiet road which I think is mainly for “off-road” driving or dirt bikes and we didn’t see any cars. However, keep your dogs close by just in case.

Near to the top of the hill, the lane levels out. Here there is a large round stone with engraving on it here to mark your way.

Turn sharp left onto an unsurfaced track. At the bottom of the track, you’ll find yourself in Edensor village.

Keep going straight on and cross the road.

Follow the path which bears right and goes over the hill. This then drops down to the bridge near Chatsworth House where there are some great photo opportunities.

Here you can head up towards Chatsworth House and grab a coffee (and maybe a snack!) from the café outside.

Once you’ve refuelled, head back down to the main path and follow it to the black kissing gate. Go through here and then follow the path past some houses and cottages and by the river.
