This south coast city is the perfect mix of history, shopping and waterfront views. For women travelling solo, it ranks among the safest weekend destinations in the UK, giving you that much needed peace of mind so you can relax and enjoy your time there.
Getting there and getting around
Southampton is well-connected, so reaching the city is easy. A train from London is only an hour-long trip, and if you prefer driving, a car will get you there in around two hours.
The city is also one of the UK’s busiest cruise ports, so you could even arrive or leave by ship.
Once you’re in the centre, most of the main sights, shops and restaurants are well within walking distance, which makes it that much easier to explore solo.
For trips to the docks or surrounding villages, you’ll find taxis and buses running regularly. Rideshares are also readily available, just stick to reputable services like Uber.
Day 1: Exploring Southampton’s history
The SeaCity Museum is always a good start to the weekend. You’ll get to learn more about how Southampton is connected to the sea, plus there’s the iconic Titanic exhibition.
From there, a walk along the medieval city walls and a stop at the Bargate is a great way to stretch your legs.
You can spend the afternoon at the Southampton City Art Gallery, which you can enjoy free of charge, before stopping at Guildhall Square, where you can grab a coffee and watch city life unfold around you.
As the evening rolls in, treat yourself to some dinner on Oxford Street. The Olive Tree, Carnicero and Smokin’ Barrels Pub & Street Food should definitely be at the top of your list.
Day 2: Waterfront relaxation
Spending some time around the water is an ideal way to relax on your second day in Southampton, starting at the Ocean Village Marina.
The cafes here are perfect for a solo breakfast by the water, and the area has a relaxed vibe overall, so feel free to get lost in your thoughts. Southampton Common is a good alternative if you’d rather walk through green spaces and tree-lined paths.
Shopping enthusiasts will love the Westquay Shopping Centre, home to major brands and smaller independent stores. But if shopping is not your thing, you can always jump on a ferry to Hythe, which is all about the sea views.
As for the evening, you shouldn’t miss the chance to visit the cosy Dancing Man Brewery.
Where to stay
Since this is a solo weekend, convenience and location matter a lot.
The Premier Inn near Westquay is always a solid choice if you want something central and easy to get to. However, if you love places with a bit of character, there are a few boutique hotels around the Ocean Village Marina.
The Pig In the Wall and No.4 Carlton are particularly popular.
Even if you’re on a tighter budget, you won’t have a hard time finding hostels, guesthouses and other family-friendly options that are within walking distance of everything you want to do and see.
Southampton awaits
You really don’t need to travel far if you need some time away on your own over a weekend. Southampton is accessible and has everything you need for a bit of exploration, dining and shopping.
Now, all that’s left to do is to check your calendar and book your stay and transportation.
