Obviously though, if your road trip includes crossing the border into the United States, then you should double check that this is allowed with your car rental company first and you should make sure that any additional paperwork is sorted. If you fancy a short road trip from Toronto, then going to Niagara Falls is the best trip for you. This is a very popular road trip destination and it’s about two hours’ drive from Toronto. If you’ve never been before, then you need to go as this is a truly unique experience. Set on the borders between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is probably the most famous waterfall in the world.

You can visit Niagara Falls from both the Canadian and US side, with good viewing opportunities on both. It’s not just a waterfall that you are going to see though. There are plenty of other things that you can do whilst you are there. If you are the sort of person who likes to go hiking whilst out and about, then you can stop off at the Dundas peak, which is directly on the way. You’ll find some amazing views from the top of a sheer cliff and you get to see a few other waterfalls as well.

If you want something a lot more relaxing, and fancy visiting somewhere that is full of lakes, rivers, streams and islands, then Muskoka is the perfect place for you. This is probably the perfect weekend getaway for people who are interested in hiking and being at one with nature. However, it should be noted that this place becomes incredibly popular in the summer months.

Some of Hollywood’s biggest stars have homes here (including Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Kurt Russell). So, if you want to visit, but would prefer to go during a much quieter time, then you should probably avoid going during the summer. As previously stated though, Muskoka is purely focused on nature. There are hiking trails and national parks that are perfect for people who are interested in getting active on their road trip.

Algonquin Provincial Park

If you are planning your road trip in the summer, but don’t like the idea of being in a place like Muskoka when it is busy, then you might want to consider going on a weekend road trip to somewhere more isolated. If you want somewhere with more nature and less development, then the Algonquin Provincial Park is the right place for you.

Be warned though, the Algonquin Provincial Park is home to moose and bears as well as a lot of different species of birds. It protects a variety of natural, cultural and recreational features and values within its boundaries, so you will surely get a great experience if you decide to visit here. Don’t forget though that for a truly great experience in Algonquin, then canoeing is the best thing that you can do. Why not consider doing an overnight canoe trip?

These are only three options of things that you can do to have the best road trip from Toronto though. There is plenty more that you can do, it just depends on how far you want to drive and what you want to actually go and do.
