Sutlers Bar & Kitchen, York review

We spent this New Year’s in the lovely city of York. I was in charge of the travel plans and itinerary which included choosing a place for dinner. Being me, I left this until the last minute and started to get a little worried when a lot of places I tried were fully booked. I stumbled upon Sutlers Bar & Kitchen by accident through a Google search and I’m really glad I did.

Sutlers Bar & Kitchen

The surroundings

Downstairs is a bar and then upstairs is the restaurant which is split into three smaller rooms, giving it a cosy and intimate feel. We arrived a little early for dinner (we were terrified our taxi would be late with it being NYE) and our table wasn’t ready yet so the staff got us a bottle of prosecco, which was really reasonably priced. We were then moved upstairs to a little table before our table for dinner was ready for us.

The inside is quirky and cool with ceiling beams, velvet furniture and bookcase wallpaper. Sutlers is an independent restaurant and their ethos is to provide a fresh alternative to boring meals.

Sutlers menu

The food

The most important thing – the food. The menu is full of locally sourced ingredients and the emphasis is on the freshness of everything. They do a selection of burgers, Ration Packs (sort of like British tapas), classics and a grill selection. The menu itself is in the style of a 1940s ration book.

Sutlers steak
Both the boy and I had fillet steak which was priced at (the usual) ยฃ20.95 and was served with salad, onion rings and chips. Every part of the meal was delicious – the onion rings were light and crispy, the salad had an amazing dressing on it and the steak was seasoned to perfection. It was also cooked really well – I have mine rare and sometimes it’s difficult to get it as rare as I like and this was spot on. We enjoyed it so much, we followed it up with some ginger ice cream and another bottle of prosecco.

The staff

The staff really deserve a mention, they were attentive and chatty and really apologetic when our table wasn’t ready.

We were really impressed with the food, the staff and the service – on the busiest night of the year, everything was perfect and we’ll definitely be visiting again. It was also reasonably priced for the quality and portion size.

If you’re in York anytime soon, I would 100% recommend Sutlers AND the fillet steak!
