How to host a virtual Ladies Day party

Ladies Day

Royal Ascot 2020 takes place next week. This year all the action will be taking place behind closed doors, due to the current situation with coronavirus. So why not get your friends together to celebrate Ladies Day?

Ladies Day dates back to 1823 when it was named by an anonymous poet and women would be given free or discounted tickets to the races. Nowadays it’s a fashion highlight of the week’s racing and is all about designer creations and millinery masterpieces. It’s also a great day out and Ladies Day at Royal Ascot is probably the most coveted fashion event in the racing calendar.

My friends and I have been to the races a few times and it’s always so much to get dressed up and have a great day out. Here’s how to host your own virtual Ladies Day party.

Virtual meet up

I’ve been on lots of virtual meet ups since lockdown started and there’s plenty of video conferencing software available to make your Ladies Day a breeze. One of my favourites is Zoom and it worked really well for one of my friend’s hen dos a couple of weeks ago.

If there are six of you or less and the weather is fine, why not meet up in someone’s garden? Obviously make sure you stick to social distancing guidelines. Bring your own bottle and some snacks and don’t forget the hand sanitiser.

The outfits

Ladies Day is synonymous with fabulous outfits and your virtual Ladies Day should be no different. Get glammed up in your finery and make an effort with your make-up (strip lashes, lipstick, the lot!) – after all, we haven’t got many excuses to do this at the moment. It’s also a good excuse to re-wear something which you already have in your wardrobe, after all you don’t really need something new to sit at home!

Don’t forget your hat or fascinator – Ladies Day is all about the accessories.

You could even vote and award prizes for the best dressed, most elegant and best headwear.

Place your bets

One of the most fun things about horse racing is placing your bets. I’m notoriously unlucky and I don’t think I’ve ever won anything at the races but it’s fun to have a flutter none the less.

And just because you can’t be there in person doesn’t mean you can’t place your bets. The latest Royal Ascot Free Bets are available online. Do your research beforehand and look at the odds – don’t do what I do and choose the horse based on their name!

Drinks

A day at the races can turn into a bit of a boozy affair (if you’re lucky!) and the tipple of choice for me would be either champagne or Pimms, especially if it’s a sunny day. At home you can raid your own drinks cabinet and make sure you’ve got plenty of drinks in. If you fancy a cocktail, check out some of my favourite cocktail recipes for inspiration.

So there are my top tips for hosting a virtual Ladies Day party. Let me know if you do this, I’d love to see the pics!
