Holiday hair care tips*

Holiday hair
Although we all love going on holiday, it can be an absolute nightmare for your hair. Getting wet then drying out all the time, the heat (or the cold, if you’re on a skiing holiday!) plus tying it up whilst sunbathing, all these things can play havoc with your locks. Here are my top tips for keeping your mane looking glossy while travelling.

Tomato ketchup

Ok, so this is a bit of a weird one, but I swear it works! If you have blonde hair like me (ok, well I’ve currently got grey hair but I’m usually blonde), the chlorine and chemicals in swimming pools can really discolour your hair leaving it with an unattractive green tinge. Wash your hair with tomato ketchup (before your normal shampoo and conditioner of course) to help combat this. Not sure why it works, but it does!

Extreme temperatures can cause your hair to become dry which in turn can leave you with frizz and split ends. To keep your hair silky smooth, make sure you condition every time you wash. I also use a deep conditioner a couple of times a week and leave it on for about five minutes. My favourite is the Aussie Three Minute Miracle. If you can, you could also sleep in conditioner at least once a week for hair that positively shines.

Try a looser ponytail

Tight hair bands can be painful and cause headaches and “hair aches” at the end of a long day on the beach. If you have to wear your hair up while sunbathing, try a looser style like a low ponytail or a fishtail plait to avoid pulling hair at the roots. Tying your hair too tight can pull hair out leading to temporary bald patches so don’t do it! You don’t want to have to have a hair transplant!

Leave the drying tools at home

If you’re holidaying in a hot country, the heat will already be playing havoc with your hair, so you’ll want to avoid any extra heat. Pop your hair in French plaits for beachy waves or towel dry for a more natural look. I always think that on holiday you can get away with a more relaxed hairstyle so ditch the straighteners and curlers and embrace your natural ‘do!

Protect your scalp

There’s absolutely nothing worse than burning your scalp whilst on holiday – trust me, I’ve been there. If you have a parting and particularly fine hair, you will be susceptible to this – ouch! It hurts to brush your hair then you get the awful situation when your scalp starts to peel – not a good look. Wear a hat whilst out in the sun or try a spray with an SPF and colour protection like RedKen Color Extend.
