Bodega Derby review*

You might remember that a few weeks ago we were lucky enough to be invited to the opening of Bodega in Derby. We enjoyed it so much that we couldn’t wait to go back and so when we had a weekend in Derby recently, we knew just where we wanted to go for dinner.

Bodega is a South American cantina offering the best that the continent has to offer and Derby is the latest location to be opened in the Midlands, joining the likes of Birmingham, Leicester and Worcester. The one in Derby is located on Sadler Gate which is a perfect location if you’re wanting to visit some of the city’s bars afterwards (we did). The decor inside is a real mix of South American culture with pictures of Mexican wrestlers sharing walls with Day of the Dead artwork plus it’s super colourful – an all round great place to be. There’s a bar downstairs if you’re just stopping for drinks and more tables to eat at upstairs, where you can look out over the bustling road below.

The drinks

Ok, so my very favourite part of the meal was probably the drinks which were A-mazing! One of my favourite cocktails is a margarita and so we indulged in one or two (actually I think it was three!) with our dinner. There are other cocktails available which are described as “South American with a Bodega twist”, an extensive tequila menu and various South American and Spanish beers including Sol and Estrella. If you’re driving there are also mocktails available which I sampled last time and are amazing.

The food

My top tip for dinner here is to get a few different dishes from Bodega’s Street Food menu to share because how can you pick just one thing?! I think my very favourite dish is the nachos. They are absolutely incredible and are so much better than any I’ve ever tasted before. Homemade, they come with all the usual guacamole, salsa and sour cream as well as your choice of topping. We went with the smoky slow roasted beef brisket. As well as the nachos, we also had the grilled halloumi, mole chicken quesadillas and Dr Pepper marinated pulled pork tacos. The food is full of flavour and (to me, although I’ve never been!) really authentically South American.

For pudding we had the churros with caramel sauce and the white chocolate and mojito cheesecake which were absolutely to die for.

The staff

The very best thing about Bodega is the lovely staff. Every single member of staff takes the time to chat to you while you’re there and our waitress was great – she recommended different things and was really attentive, making sure we always had what we wanted and were topped up with drinks.

We had an amazing time when we went for dinner at Bodega – the atmosphere, the food and the drinks all made for a great experience and I would fully recommend it to anybody.
