#BookClub: The Wedding Girls by Kate Thompson*
I’d already read another book by Kate Thompson, Secrets of the Singer Girls, so I was really excited when I was asked to take part in the blog tour for her new release, The Wedding Girls. It was pretty much perfect timing as I was off on a beach holiday to Tenerife so I knew it would be a great book for then.
The Wedding Girls tells the story of Kitty, Stella and Winnie – three best friends who all work in wedding shops in Bethnal Green. It’s set pre-World War II and is packed full of nostalgia and history.
I adored reading about this time – a time that is so different to mine, especially for women – and the struggles that each of the girls face. There is romance, family issues and questions of career, all with a strong backbone of east end values. The characters are really well rounded and super likeable, although the three central characters are all very different – from headstrong Stella to innocent Kitty.
Although the story concentrates on the three main characters, there’s also a bit about the pre-war tensions in the country which really help to give the story context. It’s a roller coaster ride full of emotion, can be pretty gritty in places, and I became totally invested with the characters throughout. I really liked the fascist storyline which runs alongside (and is interwoven with) the main plot. There’s also a couple of older characters who are really quite charming.
It’s a really heart warming story of perseverance in the face of poverty and I absolutely loved it! It only took me a couple of days to completely devour it…and I was rationing myself! This is a girly-beach read, but with a hard edge and a little more intelligent than your average chick lit novel.
A lovely touch to the book is that it includes a list of wedding traditions and where they’ve come from at the end of it. I can imagine it would be a perfect read for someone who has just gotten engaged!
The Wedding Girls will be released on 9th March 2017 (my birthday!) by PanMacmillan and is available from Amazon.
