Things to consider on long travels*
If you are planning on going on a long trip, then you’ll need to make sure that you’re fully prepared for it. You might find a long trip more challenging or just otherwise different from a shorter trip – especially if you haven’t taken an extended holiday before. There’s lots of things to consider, and in this article I’m going to take a look at just a few of the most important aspects. Once you’ve read my top tips for long travels, you should find it easy peasy to make the most of a long trip and you’ll have an amazing time.
You need to make sure that you do not overpack. Packing too much is soon going to literally weigh you down when you are on a long trip, especially if you are moving around from place to place. Plus, it’s really annoying to keep re-packing every couple of days – I found this out when we did our east coast Australia road trip. You probably don’t really need to take that much anyway – especially if you’re travelling to a hot country – just bikinis and cut off shorts!. If you want to live by one rule it should be that the longer you are going for, the less you are going to want to have on you. If you are finding it difficult to cull your clothes, just remember that you’ll probably do washing at some point during your trip so you can re-wear outfits.
Your personality will dictate who you want to go on your travels with. There are loads of advantages to taking long trips by yourself, you might want to think about having some kind of company with you when you go. After all, when you are travelling for a long time it can become a little lonely, and having friends with you can prevent that. However, it’s not that simple, and it is all about ensuring that you are going to actually know what you want from the experience – it might well be that you are keen to experience some solo travel and spend a good amount of time alone, after all. Make sure that you are getting whatever you feel you really need from it – that is all that should actually dictate what you do and what you don’t do.
If keeping in touch with people at home is important to you, make sure that you are able to easily call home at any time. When you are going out on a long trip, it is so easy to find yourself feeling lonely and wanting to call back home, so you need to make sure that there’s nothing to get in the way of this. That means, first and foremost, having a good phone contract, or one that you can easily top up online at a site like Ding. You might even want to think about getting hold of an international sim card, so that you can call cheaply whenever you want to. Try not to rely on calling home, especially if you are trying to gain some life experience by travelling for a long time on your own. It is good to know that the option is there should you need or want to take it, and that will help if you have any issues during your travels.
If there is one thing that you need to be aware of at all times, it is your own safety. Often on holiday, we forget that some situations can be dangerous, so ensure that you have your wits about you at all times. This could mean avoiding certain areas if you are on your own – or even if you are not – or it could just mean taking care to adopt a certain attitude. However you need to do it, it is hugely important as you travel around the world.
