New York Day 2 – what we did
Statue of Liberty
In the morning we headed Downtown on the subway to South Ferry and the Statue of Liberty. The statue was a lot smaller than I expected, but then I didn’t know if that was because all the buildings are so huge! We went to the top of the crown which was about 400 steps – I was exhausted by the time we got there! The steps inside the statue are in a tight spiral so you do end up getting quite dizzy. It was crazy to think we were actually inside the Statue of Liberty.
We wandered round Central Park for hours trying to find a horse and carriage. We eventually found one and took a guided tour through the park. Our tour guide was brilliant, she gave us a great history of the park and the surrounding buildings. The park is so big (like pretty much everything else in New York!) and there is so much to see – the ice rink, the zoo, the lakes, etc.
New Year’s Eve Party
Day 2 of the New York trip was New Year’s Eve so we headed to a party that we had bought tickets for (don’t ask – they WERE expensive!). The venue overlooked Times Square, where we had decided against joining the one million revellers that assembled there. Apparently you can’t move once you’re in which means no drinking, no eating and no toilet breaks! The security on New Year’s Eve is really high and so you need tickets to get into Times Square. We watched the ball drop at midnight and then turned to the other window to watch the Central Park fireworks.
