Dare 2 Dine at Intu Derby
The lovely Kirsty Ralph, a fellow blogger that I know from the East Midlands blogger group let me know about the Dare 2 Dine event at the Intu centre in Derby and I’m so glad she did!
After a day of meetings at work, I had the beginnings of a stress headache and so when I arrived home, I wasn’t sure whether to go to the event or not. Mr P and I discussed and managed to talk each other into it and so we decided to go. It’s not far from our house to Derby so we jumped in the car and set off. The very best thing about this event was that plus 1s were invited and so I got to bring my best friend (and husband), the wonderful Mr P along. Kirsty also brought her lovely hubby Simon along and so it was a sort of blogger double date.
The event took place at the Showcase Cinema de Lux and when we arrived, we were shown through to the bar in the Director’s Lounge which I’d never been to but had heard lots about. The Director’s Lounge is a cinema screen with comfy sofas instead of the usual cinema chairs. The sofas are set out in two seaters and are set away from the others so you have plenty of private space and there are tray tables where you can place your drinks and snacks.
The invitation to the event was really secretive and didn’t give much away at all and so I literally had no idea what to expect. When we arrived we were told that the film was Pulp Fiction (one of my favourites ever since sixth form film studies class where we analysed the opening scene for our coursework!) and were greeted with a glass of prosecco and some spicy nuts provided by Nando’s – my kind of greeting! All the staff were wearing short black wigs in a Mia Wallace bob-style.
We also took part in a quiz (Mr P and I LOVE our quizzes) – Pulp Fact or Pulp Fiction where we had to guess which statements were true and which were false in order to win a DVD of the film. Did you know that in the famous scene where Mia Wallace gets stabbed with the hyperdermic needle, Uma Thurman ACTUALLY gets stabbed with the needle? Ouchie!…We won the DVD!
We were then shown through to the screen where The Delray Rockets – a cool, kick-ass rock-a-billy band straight out of the 1950s – were playing the film’s soundtrack. The band were really great and properly set the scene for the film. A couple also came on stage and recreated the famous scene from the Jack Rabbit Slims club dance contest which John Travolta and Uma Thurman take part in.
Then it was time for the film to start and, of course, dinner. This was really cleverly done – during the film, when certain foods were mentioned, the corresponding foods were brought out. For example, during the famous “quarter pounder with cheese” scene in the car, when Vincent mentions that fries are served with mayonnaise, we were brought fries with mayonnaise! All the food was provided by the restaurants in the Intu centre, and here’s the delicious menu…
Selection of Appeteasers – Nando’s
Dough Balls with Garlic Butter – Pizza Express
Skin-on-fries and Mayo – Joe’s Kitchen
Kahuna Burger – Studio One
Teriyaki Steak Soba – Wagamama
Pancake with Berry Compote – Joe’s Kitchen
Tiramisu – Zizzi
Peroni – Zizzi
Tropical juice (mango, apple and orange) – Wagamama
Ben & Jerry’s Vanilla Milkshake – Showcase Cinema de Lux
The Brave (Famous Grouse, pressed apple juice, fresh ginger juice and Fentinmans Ginger Juice) – Joe’s Kitchen
Coffee – Costa
During the film there was an interval where we were served cocktails in the bar. And there was also the thing that all great events have – a photobooth with props! Mr P made a quick beeline for the dressing up box and grabbed a very fetching green feather boa!
The whole event was amazing – the theme was kept all the way through, the food was delicious, and it was a great choice of film. We left with Halloween doughnuts from Krispy Kreme, some delicious cupcakes which we’ve been steadily devouring over the course of this week, and an inforgraphic about Pulp Fiction in the frame.
Thank you to Intu Derby for inviting Mr P and I along.
