Cool River Cafe is situated in Matlock, just by Hall Leys Park and next to the River Derwent – hence the name! It’s an independent cafe which serves barista coffee, homemade cakes and delicious food.
We popped in for breakfast yesterday as a little treat for my boy’s birthday. I’d had lunch here a few months before – a Mediterranean vegetable panini and a bottle of prosecco – and I was really impressed with it.
There are a couple of options for breakfast including a stack of pancakes, and eggs on toast but we both opted for a full English and a latte. The breakfast was slightly different to one that you’d find on a normal menu and included sausage, bacon, a fried egg, roast vine tomatoes, portobello mushrooms, black pudding, white pudding, artisan toast and fried potatoes.
All of their meats are locally sourced from a butchers in the nearby village of Holloway which I really like – basically they’re supporting a local business and choosing quality over a cheap wholesaler. The breakfast was slightly on the expensive side at £8.95 but I think it was worth it.
It was really delicious and the additions of black and white puddings and fried potatoes was a welcome addition to a usual full English. The mushrooms were absolutely full of flavour.
The portions were plenty big enough but not totally overwhelming – although I couldn’t finish all of mine! Plus – the yolk in the egg was perfectly runny – and essential for any full English breakfast!
The atmosphere was really nice, it was quite busy for a Friday morning, and the staff were really lovely. The coffee was delicious and beautifully presented, setting us up for our quick journey over to Darwin Forest (more on our trip to come soon!). It’s also fair trade – coffee with a conscience.
I’d totally recommend Cool River Cafe for a delicious breakfast to set you up for a great day out in the Peak District.
